Camp Operator – Heather Black

As the creator and Director of Mixed Greens, I have had the pleasure of getting to know and work with many awesome families over our years here.  As our family has grown, and our children have grown up, it became apparent that we didn’t want the Mixed Greens Community experience to end at preschool graduation!  Together we decided that we would like a place for our older children to keep on being Green, even after their days at “big” school.  Through our partnerships and memberships with the Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education and the American Camp Association, we learned and took the steps necessary to become an Organized Day Camp so that we could extend our services to our extended family.  We are so excited to continue learning, growing, and being Green with all of you as we extend and enjoy the magic of childhood and the beauty of community!

Camp Director – Heather Harrison

Hi there, my name is Heather Harrison, and I am more than thrilled to be a part of this amazing community of Mixed Greens! I completed teacher training hours at Mixed Greens years ago, and have been the Director/Head Counselor at Camp Ever Greens and a substitue teacher at Mixed Greens for 3 years now. Ever since I was a little girl, I have always had a passion for the outdoors. Gardening, camping, and running cross country were a few of my favorite activities. I have also had an extreme connection with animals, always training my dogs’ basic obedience and specialty tricks as well. I was a very active FFA (Future Farmers of America) member in the Campbell, CA Chapter, competing in speech competitions and raising and showing animals, receiving 2 blue ribbons…I raised three pigs, a lamb, two turkeys and shared a steer with a fellow FFA member!

One of my greatest memories when I was younger was attending science camp. Remembering how much joy it brought me singing songs and learning about the earth around me fascinated me and I am so excited to be given the opportunity to share that same joy with other children.

I have my Camp Director certification from the American Camp Association, and earned my Child Development teaching certificate from SRJC.  I started this new direction in my career because of my daughter, Violet. The day she was born, a love for children bloomed that I had never realized I had before her arrival.  I started taking Child Development classes to ensure that I am doing everything I can to become the best mother possible. In doing so, I realized I have a talent for teaching and a passion for guiding new sprouting minds! Working for Mixed Greens and Camp Ever Greens, I am given an opportunity to extend my knowledge of development and nurturing to benefit other children as well as my own.  I am so excited to get to know all of these wonderful children and their families!

Administrative Assistant – Alyssa Rumrill

Hello, My name is Alyssa and I am thrilled to be the Administrative Assistant for Camp EverGreens!  My son and I had been a part of the Mixed Greens family for 3 years until he graduated, so I was very excited to join the amazing staff in this new after-school program.  I was a nanny in my early twenties to 3 great children who were also raised in a Waldorf/Reggio/Montessori philosophy,  so I have had experience with this style of learning for quite a while.  I took an extended break from childcare to become a travel agent, working with family trip planning and traveling the world meeting many amazing people in many different cultures.  Life has circled back around and allowed me to again enjoy the beautiful company of little ones, watching them grow and learn and have FUN with our Camp Ever Greens program.  I earned my Day Camp Director certification from the American Camp Association, and was the onsite Camp Director for it’s first year of operation…I now mostly run the show from behind the scenes, helping both Heathers keep everything in order!  When I am not at Camp, you can find me subbing for teachers at Mixed Greens, playing with my husband and son around town, making art, and of course TRAVELING!

Counselor – Nada Martin

Hi, my name is Nada Martin and I am the Art teacher at Mixed Greens, as well as a counselor at Ever Greens!  I studied Art at Occidental College in Los Angeles and at the University of California at Berkeley. After completing my BA in the Practice of Art at Berkeley, I continued my education at various institutions in the Bay Area with a focus in Early Childhood Education, and earned my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from San Francisco State University. I have familiarity and practice with many modes and methods of education, including the fluid, constructivist, and experiential Reggio Emilia approach. I have had a 20+ year career in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. I am passionately committed to educating the whole child; heart, body and mind, while fostering critical thinking, independence, compassion, and a lifelong love of learning.

I especially love sharing nature and doing art with children.  It is serendipitous that Heather and I have found each other because we share a common formative influence on our philosophy about the education of young children. We both devoted part of our careers to working at the same preschool in Mill Valley; however, our paths did not cross until we both came to be in Santa Rosa!

I am of Lebanese and Anglo American descent (Lebanese dad, Anglo mom).  I grew up in the Middle East and Europe, and came to the U.S. during summer trips to visit my mother’s family, and, eventually, for college.  I live in Santa Rosa with my husband, Tony, our son, Dante, our playful mutt, Darwin, and our laid-back turtle, Slider.

Counselor – Matthew Izen

Matthew Izen was the Music teacher at Mixed Greens, and has been a counselor at Camp Ever Greens since its inception. His passion for learning and love of music is obvious when he’s with the kiddos. It’s a trait passed down from his parents, both educators themselves. His enthusiasm is matched only by that which he brings out of the children…He certainly has as much fun as they do!
Upon graduating from Montgomery High School, Matthew made the decision to concentrate on his musical career. It proved a fruitful choice. Through extensive travel, he learned to appreciate all of the different lenses through which people view the world. He also got to tour Japan twice, which he thinks is pretty cool. Above all, the freedom allowed him to grow and realize that what he cares about most is education. Through education, he sees more compassion. Through education, he sees a more connected community. Through education, he sees endless possibilities.
After over a decade of touring, and the birth of his son Cassius and daughter Lyra (MG alum and current kiddo), Matthew has taken a hiatus from the road. He is back in school, working towards his teaching credential while having a blast with the entire Mixed Greens family!

Counselor – Grace McKenna
Hiya, my name is Grace McKenna, and I am very happy to return as a Counselor at Camp Ever Greens for another year! I recently graduated from ArtQuest at Santa Rosa High School. I plan to one day become an elementary school teacher. I have 2 younger sibling Mixed Greens grads, as well as a new baby brother, that I’ve spent a lot of time caring for. I’m very grateful to have this opportunity to get experience for my future career. I look forward to making more memories and having a super fun time with your kids at Camp Ever Greens!
